The Role of Academic Advisors and Mentors in Student Life
Who are academic advisors (curators)?
Academic advisors are usually university staff members (lecturers or faculty representatives) who are officially assigned to support a specific group of students throughout their academic journey. Their role is to provide guidance on administrative matters, help students navigate academic processes, and assist with adaptation to university life.
How are academic advisors selected?
1. Chosen from university staff
- Typically, advisors are selected from experienced faculty members or staff who:
- Have prior experience working with students,
- Understand academic procedures,
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
2. Approval by faculty leadership
- The final appointment is made by the dean or a designated academic coordinator. In some cases, the selection is discussed within the academic staff to ensure a good fit.
3. Based on motivation and interest
- Often, advisors take on the role voluntarily, expressing a personal interest in supporting students. Some institutions may even gather student feedback or preferences when assigning advisors.
4. Key qualities required:
- At least 1–2 years of experience in higher education,
- Ability to assist students both academically and socially,
- Resilience and calmness in challenging situations,
- Friendliness and emotional openness to build trust.
Why is the advisor’s role important?
Academic advisors help create a supportive and welcoming learning environment, particularly for first-year students. They offer essential guidance, assist in resolving concerns, and foster a sense of community within the group.
Advisors also act as a communication bridge between students and university administration, helping ensure academic and social success.
How do students get connected with their advisor?
On the first day of studies, the faculty will introduce your assigned academic advisor, explain their responsibilities, and provide their contact information.
