Postrelko Valentyn Mykhaylovych

He was born in Kyiv, into a family of employees, and he chose his path in medicine not by chance: his grandmother and mother were doctors, and soon his family will celebrate 100 years of devoted service to people in the medical field!

In 1967, V. M. Postrelko entered the Kyiv Medical School No. 2, and from March 1970 he began working at the Kyiv Psychiatric Hospital. In May of the same year, he was drafted into the army, where he served as a sanitary instructor and chief of the pharmacy of the air defense battalion.

In 1972, Valentin Mykhailovych continued his studies at the Kuibyshev Medical Institute. It was there, in Russia, that as a student he could observe the problems that drew his attention to narcology. In 1979, the young doctor returned to Ukraine, started a family, and initially found a job as a doctor in the medical center of the Kyiv railway station. However, in July 1980, V. M. Postrelko returned to psychiatry: he worked as a resident of the Kyiv Regional Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 in department No. 5, where H. M. Zilberblat was the head at that time. He combined his work in the hospital with shifts in our emergency psychiatric care.

In 1981, he specialized in “Psychiatry” at the Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education in the department headed by Professor N. I. Streltsova.

In the same year, he began to work on the development and introduction of enteral sorbent materials into the practice of narcology. In 1982, the first public scientific speech of a young doctor took place at the All-Union conference on sorption materials in Kharkiv. It was there that he met Professor I. K. Sosin, who offered scientific guidance, and in 1990 V. M. Postrelko successfully defended his candidate’s thesis on the topic: “Treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome by the enteral sorbent method.”

Since 1986, Valentin Mykhailovych, as a narcologist, took an active part in the liquidation of the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, since May 2 he repeatedly visited the station to help patients who suffered not only from radiation but also from excessive doses of alcohol. Since 1990, he has been actively working on his doctoral dissertation, which he successfully defended in 2010 on the topic: “Alcohol dependence syndrome of participants in the liquidation of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant: clinic, diagnosis, therapy”, and his scientific advisors were the famous professors K. M. Loganovsky and V. O. Buzunov.

As a scientist, V. M. Postrelko has 30 years of experience in the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: first, it was the Institute of Sorption and Problems of Endoecology, and since 2011, the Institute of Surface Chemistry named after O. O. Chuyk, where he actively continues to work on the development and implementation of new sorption materials. He is the author of more than 100 publications, including articles, textbooks, a monograph, 10 inventions, and copyright certificates.
